About

My name is Ayla Yebba and I’ve been a Girl Scout for 13 years. During my senior year in high school, I completed my Girl Scout Gold Award project which is the highest award a girl can earn in the program. To earn this award, a Girl Scout must take on a problem/issue in her community and create a sustainable solution that has a change in the world.

I identified a real problem in our community. There is an over abundance of tattered and torn, weathered and worn American flags awaiting a proper disposition. My project, “Honoring Our Flag,” has provided a networking system for members in my community and cremation services to help properly retire American flags with deceased veterans.

Prior to the cremation, one star is cut from the flag and presented to the veteran’s family as a keepsake for one final act of honorable service. One flag is paired with one veteran yielding the “One Star” memento.

I believe that all American flags deserve to be retired with the utmost respect and being cremated or buried with a veteran provides a significant way to do so in one final act of honorable service.
