US Flag Background Information
- On June 14, 1777 the US first official American flag was established by Betsy Ross.
- Today’s flag is the 27th version of the American flag.
- The designated day to honor the American flag is June 14, Flag Day.
What does the American flag stand for? The shared history, pride, principles and commitment of the American people. It’s a symbol for ALL men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country.
Pieces of the American flag:
- The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies.
- The 50 stars represent the 50 United States.
- Red: courage and hardiness
- White: purity and innocence
- Blue: vigilance, perseverance and justice
Why is it important to show respect for the American flag? It’s important to respect and honor the over 1.1 million American citizens who have fought and sacrificed their lives for this great nation under our flag.
